Jack Layton on This Hour Has 22 Minutes

Jack gets Marg’d. And other choice moments.

Lots of Canadian politicians have been great sports about the merciless satire this CBC fake-news show dishes out on their (usually) all-too-deserving heads, but Jack seems to have had the most fun of all. Certainly he was the least awkward, and the most genuinely tickled.

If the true test of one’s character is whether one can laugh at oneself, he passed it with flying colors.

From all your postings on him, he sounds like my kind of guy. And I was absolutely shocked when I saw that he was the same age as I am. Makes you look nervously over your shoulder.
He looks like he had the same philosophy as me. I am NOT that old! I am celebrating the 40th anniversary of my 20th birthday.
I wish I had known you, Jack. It will always be my loss.

Jim, he was definitely your kind of guy. Mine too. In fact, everybody’s unless their idea of a great person is a robot like Harpo. Who, I might add, will be lucky to get one tenth of the visitors Jack’s casket got in the House of Commons rotunda today. There were hundreds of thousands and they stretched all around the Centre Block. And there was LOTS of orange in the crowd!

  2. Beijing York says:

I’ve been away at meetings all day so I didn’t get a chance to follow the news. Hundreds of thousands at the rotunda? Freaking awesome.

Harper must be so envious. He tried to hop on Jack’s “cool” factor by going on about the jam session that was never to be but nobody bought that shit. He just came across as a crass dweeb.

    • Sabina Becker says:

LOL, I noticed that! But I have to say it was damn decent of him to offer the state funeral…although I do suspect it was more of a canny, strategic move based on Jack’s obvious popularity. There’d have been a huge outcry if he hadn’t done it.

Nice tribute to the greatest politician in the country. He will be missed by many of us.
